Which leads me to ask..when was the last time you laughed out loud you nearly peed your pants? Yup I said it...you know the kind of laughing...where your cheeks and your stomach start to hurt so much?
I can tell you prior to this weekend it had been a while. I guess somewhere between the family priorities, over committed schedules, bosses hounding you and the looming economy….its really no wonder we have gotten away from this past time.
In fact studies show that us adults laugh on average about 17 times a day compared to a child laughs which is about 400 times a day. So in honor of April being National Humor Month I want to raise awareness to the importance of adding laughter into your life.
What is exactly is laughter?
I know it’s redundant to state the obvious but I felt the definition was interesting so I’m including it…what exactly IS laughter anyway? “Laughter is an audible expression or appearance of happiness, or an inward feeling of joy (laughing on the inside). It may ensue from jokes, tickling, and other stimuli. Strong laughter can sometimes bring an onset of tears or even moderate muscular pain.”
Yup..that’s what I thought…
Why is Laughter so Important?
Well laughter really is the kryptonite of stress! Benefits of laughter are:
-increased endorphins which are our body’s natural pain killers,
-lowers your blood pressure
-reduces stress
-promotes relaxation
-Increases oxygen to the brain which gives us energy
-Increases our immune system
Overall it just makes you feel good!
And since stress is the number one route cause of heart disease, high blood pressure and other illnesses. Stress also affects the immune system which protects us from many other serious illnesses. I think its best to not only add yourself a daily dose of inspiration…..but also one of laughter.
Tips to keep in mind to add more humor into our life:
-Be Open Minded, you can find humor in many life’s situations
-Don’t take yourself too seriously
-Spend time with quality people that make you laugh..we are 30 times more likely to laugh in the company of others
-Laughter is contagious, so spread some joy at home, at work or even in the car by yourself who knows you could have someone drive by and stare at you!
Have a wonderful week!
