Success Ingredient-‘Self-Esteem’
This week marks the official launch of my Life Recipes for Success Audio Series & while I’m reeling with excitement & anticipation of all the hard work, visualization, planning, and action up until this point—there is still that little voice in your head that questions your ability at times to succeed. What did I do? I asked myself a series of positive reflect type questions, did a bit of journaling, reached out to a couple colleagues that I can trust for support and BANG! My positive self-esteem is back in action.
It’s perfectly normal to 2nd guess any new event where you aren’t sure what the outcome will be. That is our fear talking. What feeds our enjoyment of any new task, project,or future event is our self-esteem.
I believe Self-Esteem is such an important success ‘ingredient’, in fact, it’s so big and foundational that I am going to create a continued segment on building self-esteem in the near future to focus on the different tips that will really assist individuals in their journey to overcome their insecurities and negative self talk.
So what exactly is Self-Esteem?
The dictionary describes it as “a feeling of pride within yourself, overall appraisal of one’s worth, personal feelings or opinions of oneself, a feeling of self-worth, self-confidence, self-respect, a feeling of being pleased or proud or confident in oneself.”
Self-esteem is also what our unconscious believes to be true about how worthy, lovable, valuable and capable we are.
Broken down
Self-means ‘one’
Esteem means-to be ‘honored, respected, admired & accepted’
So in simple terms, self esteem is your opinion of yourself. High self esteem is a good opinion of yourself and low self esteem is a bad opinion of yourself.
Where do the origins of Self-Esteem come from?
They consist of a combination of society at large, your parents, school, your peers, & mass media all play a part in the development of how we see ourselves. As young children we knew what we wanted and we went for it but through the years we have been conditioned at times to do the opposite. Which over time affects our overall perspective on trying something new or going against the grain or advice of others especially family.
Why is Self-Esteem so Important? It is the basis for all happiness, success, and fulfillment. I also believe it is foundational to greater undertakings.
Your potential to achieve what you most desire is directly related to your self esteem.
